The country of India captures the biggest area in the Indian Subcontinent. India is mainly surrounded by Pakistan, China, Nepal, Sri Lanka Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh. The large geographic area makes it the seventh biggest country in the world.

  • Himalayan North Region:

  • The Plains

  • Western India
  • This region mainly contains the states of Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Daman and Diu, Rajasthan, Dadra and Nagar Haveli. This region of India is known its large desert and pretty beaches.

  • Southern India
  • The states comes this area are Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Nicobar, Karnataka, Pondicherry, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Lakshadweep. This region is famous for tropical forests, historical temples, backwaters and many more.

  • Eastern India
  • Eastern India consists of West Bengal, Odessa, Sikkim, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. This region of India is famous for its rich culture and history.

  • North-Eastern India
  • The states comes under this region are Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Assam. This region of India is endowed with beautiful places, rich flora and fauna and lush green forests.

    So the great land of India is divided in above regions. These regions are categorized according to their geographic characteristics.

Arjuna’s Penance Mahabalipuram Tamil Nadu

The Arjuna’s Penance bas-reliefs are constructed in the middle of the 7th century. These carvings are included among the world’s largest bas-reliefs. The dimensions of these stone carvings are approximately 28 m long and 12 m high. The subjects of these bas-reliefs are either the Descent of the Ganges or Arjuna’s Penance.

The reliefs are explained in the Panchatantra and show the run of the Ganges from the mountains of Himalaya. The fissure in the rocks is possibly the most renowned part of thefresco. The fresco depicts a famous legend which is related to ancient Hindu mythology. According to the legends, on this earth King Bhagirath prayed a lot for bringing the Ganges down on earth from heaven. He wants to do so for the purification of his ancestors’ souls. But his plan is skewed when he came to know that the flood by Ganges will inundate the earth. So he prayed to Lord Shiva in order to convince him for holding the great river.

The Arjuna’s Penance bas-reliefs are also famous for its cave temple. This small temple is located on the left side of the carving. The name of this cave temple is Pancha Pandava Mandapa. The Arjuna’s Penance also depicts the story of the five Pandava brothers. The story is related to severe austerities by Arjuna in order to get Shiva’s weapon. The word ‘penance’ in Hindu mythology gives the meaning of ‘give to get’. The fresco tells the story of spiritual blackmail by Arjuna in order to acquire some super powers.

The area is taken as a symbol to the greatness of the Pallavas. Both the stories related to area depicts this as the river Ganges is a symbol of purity and the brave Arjuna is symbolic to heroism.
