The backwaters of Kumarakom are located near the city of Kochi in the Tamil Nadu State. It is placed at a distance of 15 kilometres from Kottayam. This place is well known for its scenic beauty and serene surroundings. It is also popular for Ayurveda practices. The chiseled debris collected from the shore of the islands of Andaman and Nicobar in Bay of Bengal. It is popularly known as “The Art of the Sea”. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is home to a number of bird species which are rare or endangered. It extends over an area of 14 acres. Some of bird species found in this sanctuary are darters, teals, storks, egrets and sot herons. The tourists can carry binoculars for a better view of these birds.
