Jaldapara is one of the unexplored wildlife sanctuaries in India. It is situated in the Jalpaiguri region of the West Bengal State. This sanctuary is expanded over an area of 116 square kilometers. Jaldapara was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1941.
This sanctuary is mainly targeted to defend the declining population of Rhinos. Rhinos also prefer this place it provides ideal habitat for them. There are several marshes and pools in the sanctuary. One can find deciduous forest here. These forests are scattered with water courses and grasslands.
Beside Rhino, the other fauna resources of this sanctuary include Gaur, rhesus macaque, swamp deer, hog deer, wild dog, wild boar, sloth, chital, black bear, sambhar, elephant, jackal, hare, porcupine, panthers, marking deer, large chivet, otter and tiger. In the daytime, the tourists can see deer, rhinos, rhesus macaques and wild boar.
The sanctuary is also rich in terms of birds. The birds which are found commonly in the sanctuary include red jungle fowl, gray partridge, peafowl, adjutant stork, Bengal florican, sand plovers and red flanked robins.
The best time to plan a visit to Jaldapara wildlife sanctuary is during the month of March or April. During these months, you can possibly have a sight of wild animals. They attract for grazing in the newly grown grass of grasslands. The tourists are also offered elephant safari in some limited areas of the park. The time of evening, early morning and night are best if you want to see grazing rhinos. Accommodation is also provided within the sanctuary in the form of guest house named as Hollong. The visitors are required to book their rooms in advance if they are planning a trip to the sanctuary.
Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary is easily accessible with all sorts of transport means. Although private cars or tourists cabs are preferred for convenience and so you can also enjoy the nearby locations.
