Ajanta and Ellora: Example of Architectural Brilliance
The caves of Ajanta and Ellora are situated at a distance of 100 kilometres from the Aurangabad city of Maharashtra. These caves were exposed during a hunting trip by Mr. John Smith who was a Captain in British Army. It is not only an example of great architecture but it is a base that can be used to study the ancient phases of sculpture, architecture and paintings related to Buddhism.

The Ajanta caves are believed to be the best design of Buddhist Art and Architecture. In the third century, Buddhist monks cut these caves from the volcanic emission of the Deccan area. These ancient caves have magnificent paintings drawn on the ceiling and wall which gives a pictorial description of the life of Lord Buddha. The various incidents of Lord Buddha’s life are described through these paintings.
On the other hand, the 34 caves of Ellora are the supreme example of the architecture of cave temple. The Faiths of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism are reflected by these caves. It is believed that these caves were carved during the period of 350 A.D. to 700 A.D. In terms of numbers, there are 17 caves which represent Hinduism whereas Buddhism and Jainism are represented by 12 and 5 caves respectively.
Although these caves can be visited throughout the year but the Monsoon season is believed to be the best time for a trip at Ajanta and Ellora Caves.
