Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam

The wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife reserve which is situated at a distance of 48 kilometers from Guwahati in Assam. It is mainly targeted for preservation of Rhinos. This sanctuary is expanded over an area of 15 kilometers square. The tourists can easily see rhinos during their visit to this park. The park also offers the service of elephant safari to the tourists.

Other than rhinos, the park is home to wild boar, elephants, jackals and semi-wild buffaloes. But the major attraction of this sanctuary is rhinos. There are more than 80 rhinos in this park. One can plan a trip to this wildlife sanctuary during their visit to the Kaziranga national park and Manas wildlife sanctuary. This park is a perfect location to the nature admirers and wildlife lovers.


The area of Porbitora is actually a swampy marshland and this is the reason why it provides suitable habitat to the wild boars, rhinos and the wild buffaloes. The sanctuary of Porbitora is surrounded by different villages and farmlands.

It is a very unique place in terms of geographic location and features. Due to its swampy nature, this region is not suitable for the purpose of farming. The land was earlier used by the farmers for the grazing purposes. Now, this area is famous as homeland to the rhinos.

The varieties in the resources of bird life are another attraction of this wildlife sanctuary. Porbitora is home to several birds of different species and this is why it is also popularly known as the Eastern Bharatpur.

The Guhawati Airport is the next door airport to the Porbitora Wildlife Sanctuary. It is placed at an approximate distance of 50 kilometers. The road transport means and the railway transfer services can also be used by the tourists to reach this sanctuary.
