The Masjid i Jahan-Numa is frequently recognized by the name of Jama Masjid. Jama Masjid is the chief mosque which is located in the area of the Old Delhi. This famous Masjid was specially made by the great Mughal Ruler Shah Jahan who also made the Taj Mahal. The construction of this building was started in the year 1650 and takes approximately six years to complete. The construction of Jama Masjid was finalized in 1656.
The great architecture and royalty of the Jama Masjid made it the largest and well renowned mosque located in India which attracts tourists from all around the world. The mosque is located on a central street in the Chawri Bazaar Old Delhi.
The mosque gets its name from a prayer known as Jummah. The Jummah is a kind of congregation prayer done by Muslims which is held on every Friday noon. The open space of the Jama Masjid has the capacity to hold approximately twenty thousand parishioners.
The Jama Masjid is world famous for its great regal architecture. The establishment of this historic mosque was placed on a small hill in Shahjahanabad. It is mainly made up of white marble and red sandstone. Approximately 6,000 workers and a cost of approximately 10 lakh rupees were used in the construction of this building. The mosque contains three large gates, two nearly 40m high minarets and four towers. The Jama Masjid also contains 260 pillars which are carved in traditional Jain and Hindu designs. The mosque is also home to several ruins located near to the north gate. The most famous attraction among the tourists is a very old replica of the Qur’an. The north gate also contains 389 steps.
