The great white marble mausoleum that is located in Agra is known as the Taj Mahal. In India, this world famous heritage site is situated near the Yamuna River in the states of Uttar Pradesh. Taj Mahal is an Urdu name which means the crown of the palaces.
Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor makes this mausoleum for his wife Begum Arjumand Bano. The Taj Mahal is included among the most splendid symbols of love in the world. The emperor especially wants to make a structure that survives over the centuries and known for its pious beauty of love.
With such a great consideration in minds and hearts, the Taj Mahal construction was started in the year of 1632. The Taj Mahal is considered as the premium illustration of Mughal architectural style. This architectural style merges elements from Ottoman Turkish, Persian and imperial Indian architectural style. With the help of thousands of craftsmen and artisans, the construction of main mausoleum was completed in the year of 1648. The construction of Taj Mahal was finished in the year of 1653 by the erection of surrounding buildings and a fabulous garden. The main elements of Taj Mahal are white marble, red sandstone and some precious stones like crystal, lapis Lazuli, jade, turquoise, coral, sapphire and diamonds. These were brought from different parts of India and other countries such as China, Tibet, Persia, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. It is said that a convoy of approximately 1000 elephants was used to carry the construction material.
The Taj Mahal is considered one of among the eight wonders. The site was endowed with the esteemed National Heritage Award. In addition to this, the Taj Mahal was included in UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the year of 1983.
